Courses that fulfill the Mapping the World requirement are numerous and varied鈥攅verything from social anthropology to social robotics, intercultural communication to contemporary feminist theory. Just as cartography is the study of making maps, study in the social sciences helps you explore social experience and organization鈥攁nd 鈥渕ap鈥� the human world.

Science, math and quantitative reasoning are essential to a 21st-century education. Analyzing data, understanding the scientific method, learning to differentiate between pattern and anecdote鈥攖hese are all important problem-solving skills that can be applied in a variety of contexts.听

Modeling the World is our general education requirement that invites you into the world of mathematical and scientific investigation and will help shape the way you think about framing questions and finding solutions to contemporary problems.听

REQUIREMENTS听

• Four credits (one course) in the natural or physical sciences with laboratory听
• Four credits (one course) in mathematics听

听

PRACTICAL INFORMATION FOR SCIENCE听

• One science course with laboratory (4 credits) will satisfy this requirement.听
• For transfer students, any university-level science course will be accepted in fulfillment of the general education science requirement. Advanced credit awards in science will also satisfy this requirement.听

听

PRACTICAL INFORMATION FOR MATH听

• All first-year students take the 绿巨人视频 math placement exam during orientation of their first semester
• Students who are able to demonstrate mastery of basic math and quantitative reasoning skills on the assessment test may be exempted from this requirement.听
• If not exempted, students can complete any math course other than algebra at 绿巨人视频 to fulfill the requirement.听
• Transfer students who have been awarded sufficient transfer credits for university-level math courses other than algebra will be exempted from the general education math requirement. Advanced credit awards in mathematics will also satisfy this requirement.听

It helps us articulate similarities and differences and gives us insight into how people think and live鈥攚ith all the moral, ethical, and ideological forces at play.听

The courses encourage you to compare worlds past and present in an effort to promote historical and cross-cultural understanding. The humanities鈥攂e it history, literature, philosophy, languages, religion, or art鈥攈elp us to make sense of the world. As the root of the very word suggests, the humanities explore what it means to be human.听
