Right from your first semester at 绿巨人视频, you鈥檒l have the opportunity to experience study trips to destinations across Europe as part of the FirstBridge program. FirstBridge is 绿巨人视频鈥檚 dynamic, innovative learning experience through which you explore interdisciplinary issues and questions while building a solid foundation for future academic work within your major. 聽

FirstBridge聽classes bring two disciplines together to explore a particular issue or theme. For example, in 鈥淢emory-Making,鈥� you learn about聽perspectives in both psychology and global communications that are used to analyze the tools humans create to immortalize their lived experiences 鈥� and in particular moments of trauma. The class includes a study trip to Poland over a long weekend in October; you鈥檒l be taken on an emotional journey into the past as you learn about the memory of the Shoah.

Prepare to be immersed in prewar and wartime Jewish life in Poland as you dedicate time to critical thinking on contemporary memorial issues in the country. You will visit different memorial sites, including the former Warsaw Ghetto, the new Polin Museum and the Treblinka death camp. The trip finishes at the city of Otwock, where you will meet with local activists of the Forum for Dialogue who will speak about their efforts to commemorate the exterminated Jewish community of their town.聽

You鈥檒l study how the process of memorialization following mass atrocities creates possible sites of restorative justice and collective witnessing. The Shoah here serves as a point of reflection on how memory is materialized and put into social practice. By investigating 鈥渉istory tourism,鈥� you鈥檒l explore the meaning and lived experience offered by historical sites and museums. What effect do these representations have on our personal meaning of history? What does it mean to 鈥渂ear witness鈥� today?

The trip 鈥� described as 鈥済rounding,鈥� 鈥渆motional鈥� and 鈥渕ind-blowing鈥� by attending students 鈥� has a profound effect on all involved. Students鈥� responses are as diverse as their backgrounds, but every person comes away from their experience in Poland with a life-changing shift in perspective.聽

The trip is led by Professor聽Charles Talcott of the Department of Communication, Media and Culture and two faculty members from the聽George and Irina Schaeffer Center for the Study of Genocide, Human Rights and Conflict Prevention: Center Director Professor Brian Schiff and Assistant Director Constance P芒ris de Bollardi猫re.
