AH3091A TOPICS – Mannerism: Artifice and the Self-Consciousness of Art
Florence, birthplace of the Renaissance, is rightfully considered one of the greatest cultural centers of the world. Visits to numerous churches (such as the Santissima Annunziata along with the Ospedale degli Innocenti, the Duomo, Santa Maria Novella, Santa Croce, Santa Maria del Carmine, Santo Spirito, San Lorenzo and the Medici Chapels) and museums (the Bargello and the Accademia) as well as visits to the town hall and major palaces (such as the Palazzo della Signoria, the Medici Palace and the Pitti Palace) will introduce students to the history and art of this extraordinary city. A day visit to Siena will highlight the rivalry between Florence and Siena. Students will learn how local government and artistic production are intimately connected. An on-site study of the materials and techniques used to create the works seen will be supplemented by short history and art history lectures.
