Center for Critical Democracy Studies

Book Launch of The Cambridge Handbook of Democratic Education & Workshop on the Future of Democratic Education

University Room: Q-801
Address: Entrance via 6 rue du Colonel Combes, 75007 Paris
Friday, September 8, 2023 - 09:00 to 19:00

Democratic education is central to the functioning and flourishing of modern multicultural democracies, and yet it is subject to increasing public controversy and political pressure. Waning public trust in government institutions, sustained attacks on democratic values and customs from populist politicians as well as political polarization have worked to undermine public confidence in democratic education. This conference and the associated workshop bring together philosophers of education who offer new perspectives on the history, present and future of democratic education in liberal democracies and serve as a book launch event for the Cambridge Handbook of Democratic Education (Cambridge University Press 2023).

Program of the Book Launch:

  • 9:00: Prof. Zhang (American University of Paris) – Welcome from Â̾ÞÈËÊÓƵ’s Teaching and Learning Center
  • 9:15: Prof. Harry Brighouse (University of Wisconsin-Madison) – Democratic Education and Speech in the College Classroom: What's the Real Problem?
  • 10:15: Prof. Michael Hand (University of Birmingham) – Moral Education and Democratic Education
  • 11:15: Prof. Meira Levinson (Harvard University) – Normative Case Studies as Democratic Education

The event is organized by the editors of the Cambridge Handbook of Democratic Education, Prof. Julian Culp (Â̾ÞÈËÊÓƵ), Prof. Johannes Drerup (TU Dortmund University / VU Amsterdam), and Douglas Yacek (TU Dortmund University).
