AR2091B & 3091B Sculpture: Capturing the Human Face
AR1032CCIA Intro to Sculpture
AR1032CCIB Intro to Sculpture

The south of France was a privileged destination for the modern artists in the 20th
century. The mythical trips of Matisse and Derain, of Picasso and Braque to this region
were key for the evolution of Fauvism and Cubism. The trip will proposes halts in three
Mediterranean towns — Nice and Antibes — where major artists of the 20th century like
Henri Matisse, Pablo Picasso, Nicolas de Stael chose to reside for some time; the artists
who founded major contemporary movements such as Nouveau Realisme and Supports/
Surfaces also had their attaches in the region. We will seek to understand, through firsthand
contact with this environment, the motivation for some of the most challenging
formal innovation in 20th century art.
