PL3091 The Frankfurt School of Critical Theory
2023 marks the 100th anniversary of the founding of the Institute for Social Research
in Frankfurt am Main, Germany, the 鈥渉eadquarters鈥 of the Frankfurt School of Critical
Theory. The Critical Theory of the Frankfurt School is an interdisciplinary approach
that is oriented towards practice and seeks human emancipation. Still today, it is an
influential research paradigm in philosophy, cultural studies, and the social sciences
throughout the entire world.
The study trip explores how the so-called Dialectics of Enlightenment, which Theodor
Adorno and Max Horkheimer have analyzed in their foundational book with the same
title, is reflected in the history of the city of Frankfurt. The study trip includes a visit of
the Institute of Social Research, the IG Farben building in which the Nazis produced
Zyklon B that was used in concentration camps, the former home of Johann Wolfgang
von Goethe, as well as the historical museum.
