Since antiquity, Rome has captured both artists’ and historians’ imaginations. From Poussin to Gibbon, the city’s rise and fall have inspired the greatest artists of Europe and its most prominent historians. The monuments left in the wake of the Empire and Renaissance and the political, cultural, and legal heritage of the eternal city will nourish our visit with historical walking tours in the morning and drawing and individual study projects in the afternoon. This expedition to Lazio is conceived in the spirit of the French Prix de Rome winners who were sent to Rome to inspire their urbanism, architecture, and sculpture by studying the treasures of the Eternal City. Discover and compare what was created in both cities and better understand the tremendous influence that Rome had on Paris throughout the centuries. From the classical vestiges of the Roman Forum to the modern works of the 20th century one finds relevancy.
