AH 3091 The Gothic Cathedral
Chartres Cathedral is just over an hour from Paris by train. The bulk of the cathedral was rebuilt after a large fire in 1194, from which the relic of the Virgin’s tunic miraculously survived. Less than 30 years later, most of the present-day Cathedral was complete. This monument alone provides an unparalleled overview not only of Gothic architecture, sculpture, and stained glass, but also of medieval religious, secular, and intellectual life. Walk through the historic town of Chartres to see a Romanesque house, the ‘maison du saumon,’ and several other medieval churches and visit the Stained Glass Museum.
