arrived at ̾Ƶ in the Fall of 2003 after obtaining her PhD from the University of Toronto and teaching at Western University (Canada) for 14 years.

She teaches and co-teaches courses in the French language and linguistics, literature and psychoanalysis (such as Entering Language: Becoming Human, Art, Women & Madness, Fairy Tales & Child Psychology, French Film & Fiction Now). She has recently founded a monthly joint Research & Teaching Interdisciplinary Seminar in French (FfIRE) with the Organisation international de la Francophonie to make the research of ̾Ƶ’s scholars and researchers better known.
In her own research and publications, she knits together literary theory and reading theory (i.e. the acquisition of the symbolic function) through structuralist psychoanalysis that renews psychoanalytic literary criticism. Her observations of non-reading children at Sainte-Anne's Hospital in Paris have allowed her to investigate the complexities of “the letter” and its mastery. In her book Lire délire. Forms and Analysis in this same University, exploring different ways in which elements of performance practices have been configured through cultural contexts. In Paris she taught theatre, acting, improvisation and she directed contemporary plays with the Candela Theatre Company.

Her current research, both practical and theoretical, is looking at gender issues on the art scene, how gender is performed and how it can raise political and social questions.

She has been working closely with influential French feminist artists such as ORLAN, Catherine Baÿ and Déborah de Robertis and is involved in French feminist activism (La Barbe, OLF…). Thus she investigates the links between performance, theatre and activism.

Working closely with the Théâtre du Mouvement, her artwork is focusing on deconstructing gender stereotypes through disarticulating the body and using movement techniques (Feldenkrais, Laban’s..), intending to create a new body language that is more coherent with our own fictions and definitions of selves.

Her artwork and research are now based in France mainly.

2024

DEBAT COUVERT – PARIS, France

Gender Stereotypes and Love.

2016

UNIVERSITY OF SOUTHAMPTOM, UK

20th Century Studies Symposium
At Home and Abroad: Politics and Diplomacy in the Twentieth Century.

UNIVERSITY OF EXETER, UK

Postgraduate Research on Political Thoughts.

Academic CV Laure PEPIN English 2024.pdf

2010 - 2016 UNIVERSITY OF BRISTOL (UK)
PhD Theatre and Performance
Dissertation: ORLAN and Dismemberment in Feminist Contemporary Performances
Supervisor: Dr Paul Clarke
Committee: Dr Simon Jones, Dr Kara Reilly, Dr Catherine Hindson

2008 - 2009 NOTTINGHAM TRENT UNIVERSITY (UK)
MA Fine Art
Dissertation: The Female Body in Modern Society
Supervisors: Professor Danica Maier and Professor John Newling

2007 - 2008 LANCASTER UNIVERSITY / UNIVERSITE DE POITIERS (France) MA Arts du Spectacle / Theatre Studies (Erasmus exchange)
Dissertation: Cruelty in Contemporary Feminist British Theatre Supervisor: Dr Romain Jobez

2004 - 2007 UNIVERSITE DE POITIERS (France) BA Arts du Spectacle / Performing Arts

Pépin, L., 2015. At ̾Ƶ, she teaches French as well as courses on Francophone cultures and literatures. Before joining ̾Ƶ, she taught Postcolonial Studies at Sciences Po - Saint-Germain-en-Laye in France, African and Comparative Literature at King's College London in England, and French Language and Romance Literatures at Harvard University in the United States.

Laurent's research deals with twentieth- and twenty-first-century French and Francophone literatures and cultures, with special emphasis on Metropolitan France, Sub-Saharan Africa, and Southeast Asia. Her book manuscript, The Words of Others: Remembering and Writing Genocide as an Indirect Witness, examines literary and graphic representations of genocidal violence. She focuses on the Holocaust, the 1994 genocide against the Tutsi in Rwanda, and the Khmer Rouge genocide and mass killings in Cambodia. Specifically, by connecting the authors’ representational strategies to critical theories related to memory studies, she examines how indirect witnesses, that is individuals who did not literally or personally experience genocide, problematize their own testimonial acts. Her newest project entitled Connected Histories of (Post)Coloniality: Circulation and Reception of Art Representing a Diverse Francophone Past considers the representation and dissemination of histories through art forms, with the aim of dismantling a monolithic national(istic) narrative. By insisting on their creation, their circulation, and their reception, she shows how these historical representations encourage the formation of a new heritage that encompasses different communities. The foregoing creative processes also point to their perpetual transformation that would allow for new decolonized epistemologies and ways to illuminate the past in a context which is Francophone, but also alive in its plural, global, as well as multilingual realities.

“Reclaiming Việt Nam: Memory and Embodied Transmission in Papin’s Les Os des filles.” Women, Memory, and Intergenerational Transmission in the Francophone World.
